Turkish-Iran Relations: Old Rivals or New Best Friends?

Many in the West are increasingly concerned about a Turkish-Iranian alliance against the US and Israel. However the two countries, despite their increasingly closer political and economic ties, compete over the leading position in the Middle East and for the favor of the Arab masses. For the moment the competition is materializing in pro-Palestinian endeavors like the so called “freedom flotillas” and fiery speeches against Israel by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On June 29, 2010, Ankara, in a first sign of frustration, called on Iran to return “as soon as possible” to the negotiating table over a nuclear fuel swap deal. According to a senior Turkish diplomat, Turkey voted against tougher UN sanctions under the condition that Iran would engage itself in talks on its controversial nuclear program. However, on June 28, 2010 Ahmadinejad announced that any negotiations will be postponed until late August in order to “punish” Western powers. Tehran left it unclear when and if it will continue to talk with Brazil and Turkey, its two allies.

Obama: Economy Headed in Right Direction

President Barack Obama says the latest employment figures show the U.S. economy is headed in the right direction, but more needs to be done to put Americans without jobs back to work.

The U.S. economy lost 125,000 non-farm sector jobs during the month of June.  That figure reflects the end of some 225,000 temporary U.S. census worker jobs.

The Labor Department reported a decline in the overall unemployment rate which dropped to 9.5 percent from 9.7 percent, the lowest level since 2009.

While the private sector gained 83,000 jobs, the figure was below levels from the previous two months.

President Obama recognized the mixed nature of the latest figures.  He said they show the economy is headed in the right direction…(Read More)

Images of the beleaguered BP chief executive, Tony Hayward, attending a yacht race on the Isle of Wight, just 48 hours after a hostile interrogation by a US congressional committee on the Gulf Coast oil spill, have provoked sharp criticism on both sides of the Atlantic.

President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, condemned Hayward’s attendance at the event as “part of a long line of PR gaffes and mistakes” on ABC television, adding: “I think that we can all conclude that Tony Hayward is not going to have a second career in PR consulting”.

Dow Jones Industrial Average

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, also referred to as the Industrial Average, the Dow Jones, the Dow 30, or simply the Dow, is one of several stock market indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. The average is named after Dow and one of his business associates, statistician Edward Jones. It is an index that shows how 30 large, publicly owned companies based in the United States have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market.[1] It is the second oldest U.S. market index after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created.

The Industrial portion of the name is largely historical, as many of the modern 30 components have (Click here to read the rest)

Adobe: There’s No Flash on iPad Because Apple Is Protecting Content Revenue

Why is there no Adobe Flash on the iPad? Adobe says it’s not because it’s buggy, as an Apple source claimed this afternoon to CultofMac.com.

It’s because Apple is protecting revenue streams derived from content like movies and games. If users could watch free TV shows on Hulu, they wouldn’t buy them through iTunes.

EU/IMF Greece Plan Sees Around EUR110 Billion In Funding Gap

BERLIN -(Dow Jones)- Greece faces a funding gap of around EUR110 billion over the next three years, according to the details of a bailout plan from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union seen by Dow Jones Newswires Sunday.

Earlier Sunday, Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that the new measures imposed to secure access to the unprecedented bailout package are the harshest and most austere ever imposed in European history.

The plan, dated May 2, didn’t give details of how much each euro-zone country and the IMF will give in loans.

“We anticipate covering the program’s financing requirements with financial support from euro-area member states and the IMF while strengthening access to the private capital market,” the document said.

“Notwithstanding the significant fiscal adjustment, we project a public financing gap of around 110 billion (euros), for the program period, which we expect to cover through matching bilateral lending support from euro area member states and through IMF support,” said the plan.
